Community Hub & Cultural Amphitheatre

Recognising the cultural and historical context of the location, noticeably the Indigenous and non-Indigenous heritage sites of the Quod as well as the Lomas Cottage, the governor cottages and the sacred unmarked burial grounds, the sites has great potential to emphasize Wadjemup's heritage. As we noticed minimal acknowledgement of that in the Main Settlement, we believe we could propose a design that would reflect on the heritage of the Island.

Thus our decision to propose a redevelopment project around the existing amphitheatre in front of the Quod, a rather open and underutilised space that lacked the distinctiveness of a recognisable public amphitheatre.

The Design

The community hub is designed around existing paths on the amphitheatre, connecting the Quod with the Lomas Cottage and the Qoud with Somerville Drive. These paths define our redevelopment project to reignite its past utilisation and to determine user circulation around the site, forcing them to walk towards and between heritage sites.

The rooms in the hub are basedof the defragmentation of the octagonal form of the Quod, taken apart and reconstructed around the site to form the layout of the hub. Each room has a different purpose, including:

  1. An intergenerational art gallery / exhibition space.

  2. A community-run Indigenous souvenir store and connected children's library.

  3. Two multi-purpose indoor function rooms.

  4. An eatery associated with Indigenous cooking methods.

  5. A transit terminal & guest lounge for our eco-retreat.

The hub will also include an outdoor cultural amphitheatre adequate for hosting larger events, and an Indigenous-inspired children's playscape, encouraging children to engage with the land and its culture.

Part of the community hub is a rooftop garden, accessible from the ground floor, acting as an elevated platform for gathering, resting and recreational activities.
